Prince komponierte die Ballade Nothing Compares 2 U am 15. Juli 1984. Er spielte alle Instrumente selbst ein und nahm den Song in einer Lagerhalle mit Namen Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie in Minnesota auf.[2] Toningenieure waren David Rivkin (* 1953), der auch unter dem Pseudonym David Z. bekannt ist, und Susan Rogers (* 1956), mit denen er in den 1980er Jahren öfter zusammenarbeitete.[3][4] In den Jahren 1984 und 1985 war Prince unter anderem damit beschäftigt, Songs für das Debütalbum der Band The Family zu schreiben. Diese Band war ein musikalisches Nebenprojekt von ihm, das dem Genre New Wave und Popmusik zuzuordnen ist.
