Billy Idol ist das erste Album, das der britische Sänger Billy Idol nach dem Ende der Band Generation X als Solokünstler aufnahm und 1982 veröffentlichte. Es begründete eine jahrelange Zusammenarbeit mit dem Gitarristen Steve Stevens, die zunächst bis 1989 hielt und sich ab 2005 mit dem Album Devil’s Playground fortsetzte

Die 1976 gegründete Punkband Generation X brachte im Laufe ihres Bestehens in unterschiedlicher Besetzung insgesamt drei Alben heraus. Als das letzte Album, Kiss Me Deadly, 1981 veröffentlicht wurde, hatte sich die Gruppe bereits aufgelöst. Billy Idol ging in die USA, um den Pop-Markt zu erobern. Hierbei entfernte er sich musikalisch weit von seinen Ursprüngen. Entdeckt und gefördert wurde er von dem damals sehr einflussreichen Kiss-Manager Bill Aucoin.Sein Debütalbum nahm Idol in den Westlake Audio-Studios auf. Zehn Lieder wurden für das Album ausgewählt, das am 16. Juli 1982 als Schallplatte und Musikkassette erschien. Die Veröffentlichung auf CD erfolgte erst 1984. Im August wurde der nicht auf dem Album enthaltene Titel Mony Mony, eine Coverversion des 1968 erschienenen Liedes von Tommy James & the Shondells, als Single veröffentlicht, bewirkte aber nichts in den Musikcharts. Die beiden folgenden Singles, Hot in the City und White Wedding wurden im Mai bzw. im Juli 1982 herausgebracht und stiegen in die Charts ein.
